STATE REQUIREMENTS

ELIGIBILITY

Be 18 years of age or older.

Be a resident of the State of Iowa.

Not be disqualified from voting either because of a felony conviction or adjudged mentally incompetent to vote.

Disclose whether a notary commission has ever been revoked or suspended in Iowa or any other state and whether any disciplinary action was taken.


PROVISIONS

Non-Residents: Non-residents may apply if living in a state bordering Iowa if their place of work or business is in Iowa.

Bond: None required.

Errors & Omissions Insurance: Optional.

Filing Fee: A $30 filing fee is required by the state for new and renewal notary applications.

Term: 3 years for residents of Iowa; 1 year for non-residents.

Jurisdiction: Statewide.  

Renewal: A notary public may apply 60 days before the expiration of a current commission by completing a renewal application.

Education/Testing: None Required.

Notary Seal: Required. Embosser or rubber-inked stamp.

Record Book: Recommended by the Secretary of State.
