Please follow the application for notary public commission instructions as stated on the application. All fields of the application must be completed. To ensure that your commission is accurately made without any delay, please print or type your name as it will appear on all documents you notarize to the right of the "Commissioned Name" section at the bottom of the application. Your signature must match the name that has been printed as your "Commissioned Name." This is the signature that you will use when notarizing documents. To avoid any further delays in processing your application for notary public commission, your address MUST match on both the application and your driver's license or personal identification card that you have on file with the Secretary of State's Office.

STEP 2 - FILE YOUR $10,000 NOTARY BOND WITH THE COUNTY CLERK'S OFFICE.

Once you receive your notary bond from our office you must file it with your county clerk. You have 90 days from the date of the bond to file your notary bond with the county clerk's office. The filing fee at the county clerk's office is $10.00 (with the exception of Wayne County, which may be more). When at the county clerk's office the county clerk will administer an Oath of Office and verify that you have complied with these requirements by completing the designated areas on your completed application for notary public commission. Your original signature must then be placed on the application for notary public commission. Please be sure to ask your county clerk for a receipt to keep for your records.




STEP 3 - SEND THE COMPLETED APPLICATION FOR NOTARY PUBLIC COMMISSION TO THE DEPARTMENT OF STATE.


Once you have finished the filing requirements at the county clerk's office, you must forward your completed application for notary public commission with a ($10.00 non
-refundable processing fee) to the following address:

Please send a check or money order ONLY payable to the "State of Michigan". The Office of the Great Seal will review your application for notary public commission. If and when your application for notary public commission is approved you will be issued a notary public commission appointment card. If the application for notary public commission is not approved you will receive a denial letter.



STEP 4 - PROVIDE US THE INFORMATION ON YOUR NOTARY PUBLIC COMMISSION CARD.

Once you receive your notary public commission appointment card from the State of Michigan by U.S. mail, you MUST call, fax or email us the information on the card so that we can order your new notary stamp. Please do not delay!

A $25.00 fee will be required to reproduce your notary public bond.

STATE OF MICHIGAN NOTARY REQUIREMENTS

ELIGIBILITY

Be 18 years old or older.

Be a resident of the State of Michigan.

Be a United States citizen or possess proof of legal presence.

Read and write the English language.

Be free of any felony convictions, misdemeanor convictions, and specified violations.


PROVISIONS

Non-Residents: Non-residents must maintain a place of business in the county of appointment.

Bond: A 10,000 bond is required for new or renewing notaries. The bond must be filed at the County Clerk's Office within 90 days from the date on the bond in the county where the notary will be appointed.

Errors & Omissions Insurance: Optional. Notary Service and Bonding Agency, Inc. strongly recommends that Michigan notaries insure themselves against claims of negligence.

Filing Fee: A $10 state filing fee is required for new notary applications.

Term: 6 to 7 year period ending on the notary's birthday. The term is not less than 6 years or more than 7 years from the date of appointment. 

Jurisdiction: Statewide.

Renewal: A notary may apply 60 days before expiration of the current commission by completing a new notary public application.

Notary Stamp or Seal: None required. Notary Service and Bonding Agency, Inc. strongly recommends a notary stamp or seal. A notary stamp or seal may be required on documents intended for use outside of Michigan.

Record Journal: Recommended by the Secretary of State and by Notary Service and Bonding Agency, Inc. to keep a notary journal to record the signer's name, signature, identification, date and other pertinent information that a Michigan notary performs.
