STATE REQUIREMENTS
ELIGIBILITY
Be 18 years old or older.
Be a resident of the State of Montana for at least 30 days immediately prior to appointment and must continue to reside in Montana.
Not have had a notary commission denied, revoked, or restricted in any state.
Not be convicted of a felony.
PROVISIONS
Non-Residents: Not permitted.
Bond: A 10,000 bond is required for new or renewing notaries.
Errors & Omissions Insurance: Optional. Notary Service and Bonding Agency, Inc. strongly recommends that Montana notaries insure themselves against claims of negligence.
Filing Fee: A $25 state filing fee is required for new and renewal notary applications.
Term: 4 years.
Jurisdiction: Statewide.
Renewal: Notaries may not renew their commission not more than 30 days prior to the expiration date.
Notary Seal: Required. A seal or rubber inked stamp.
Education/Testing: Required.
Record Journal: Required by law as of October 1, 2009.
