An applicant applying to be a New Mexico notary public or renew his/her current notary public commission must meet the following qualifications:

  • You should be a resident of New Mexico;
  • You should be at least 18 years of age;
  • You should be able to read and write the English language;
  • Not have plead guilty or nolo contendere to a felony or been convicted of a felony;
  • Not have a Notary Public commission revoked during the past five years.

If the application is accepted, the Governor will appoint the applicant as a Notary Public for a term of 4 years. The applicant cannot act as a Notary Public until he receives his certificate of appointment from this office.
